As summer comes to a close and the 2026-2027 school year begins, the School Transportation Association of Indiana welcomes all transportation professionals back for another year of serving Indiana's students. The opening weeks of school are among the busiest and most important times of the year for our industry. Routes are adjusted, new drivers and attendants join our teams, students learn procedures, and transportation departments across the state work diligently to ensure every child arrives safely at school and returns home each day. The dedication, professionalism, and commitment demonstrated by STAI members continue to set the standard for student transportation excellence throughout Indiana.

Message from the Executive Director

As we begin a new academic year, I want to personally thank every driver, transportation director, dispatcher, mechanic, technician, attendant, trainer, and support staff member who plays a role in safely transporting Indiana's students. Student transportation is much more than moving buses from one location to another. It is about creating a safe and welcoming environment for children, building trust with families and school communities, and ensuring that students begin and end each school day safely.

The start of the school year presents both opportunities and challenges. New students are learning bus procedures, new employees are becoming familiar with operations, and transportation departments are balancing efficiency with safety. Through teamwork, continued training, and a commitment to excellence, Indiana's transportation professionals consistently rise to meet these challenges. As students return to school, motorists must once again become accustomed to sharing roadways with school buses, increased pedestrian traffic, and students gathering at bus stops. STAI encourages members to continue promoting school bus stop-arm awareness within their communities and to work closely with local schools, law enforcement agencies, and families to educate the public about school bus safety laws and safe driving practices around student transportation vehicles.
